The original organisation was formed in 1993 to present a submission for joint state and federal funding for a WomenĄŻs Health Centre, and the Gympie and District WomenĄŻs Health Group Inc was officially incorporated in 1994. The Centre first opened its doors on the 15th September, 1994. This was largely due to a joint effort by the Gympie Zonta and Quota clubs, who also formed the management committee. It was felt very strongly that this was to be a service based on feminist principles, by women, for women.
Originally based in the Old Town Hall Building, rooms were rented from Cooloola Shire Council. It became clear early on that larger, more suitable premises would be required. The move to 10 Lawrence Street came in December 1999, followed by the move to 21 Alfred Street nine years later in December, 2008.
Funded as a primary health care service, demand for counselling was immediate. Emotional and mental health issues were the most common presenting issue, followed closely by issues around abuse and domestic and family violence.
Demand for health promotion, support, information, counselling, groups, workshops, referrals and advocacy in a supportive and accessible environment remains constant.
